Tools Needed:
- Paint Shop Pro - available here - This tutorial was written for PSPXII, but other versions should work.
Step 1: Start by creating a New blank image that is 300 X 150 pixel image with transparent background.
Step 2: Select the Text tool from the Toolbar
Step 3: From your materials pallet, change the background to white. (R=255, G=255, B=255 or #FFFFFF)
Step 4: Again using the materials pallet, change the foreground colour to the colour your text will be, for this example I have used purple (R=82, G=5, B= 167 or #5205A7)
Step 5: Using the text tool that you activated in step 2, click inside your mouse image canvas.
- From the text tool options pick a nice bold thick type font.
- Depending on the font you choose will depend on what size your text should be. You can adjust your text size also in the Text Tool options.
- Select Create as Floating not as a vector.
- For this example I used Arial Black with 72 point size and bold settings.
Step 5: Type the wording for your text in the text box and click Apply.
Step 6. Place the text in the centre of the image of where so desired but Remember: do not click outside the text. Use Edit - Undo if you lose the selection around the text.
Step 7: Now we will apply a combination of two image effects to achieve the bevel look. Firstly, click on the Effects menu, select 3D Effects and click on Cutout.
Step 8: Adjust the cutout options as follows:
- Uncheck “Fill interior with colour”.
- Select Black a shadow colour.
- Move the Opacity slider to set at 100.
- Blur should be 3.
- In the offset settings, use -2 for both vertical and horizontal and click on “OK”.
Step 9: Once again apply the same cutout effects, lick on the Effects menu, select 3D Effects and click on Cutout.Select Cutout.
Keep the cutout options the same as previously except set the shadow colour to white and use 2 for both vertical and horizontal offset settings and click “OK”.
Step 10: You will now see that you text has a bevel, but there is one more image effect you should apply to make it more realistic, a drop shadow. Click on Effects, select 3D effects and click on Drop Shadow.
Apply the following drop shadow options:
- Set the Colour to black, Opacity to 40 and Blur to 4.
- Use 3 for both horizontal and vertical Offset settings. Click on “OK”.
Step 11: We no longer need the text selection, so you can deselect the text by clicking Selections, and click on select none - or alternatively use the Control-D key combination.
If you only want a bevel effect for your text, then this complete the steps and your done move to the final at step 13.
If you would like to add a texture to your text continue with Step 12 below.

Step 12: Click on Effects, select Texture Effects and click on Textures.
Use the Texture Drop list to view the available textures. Playing with the other texture settings such as depth, smoothness and shininess will give you a different effect.
NOTE: You may have different textures to that seen on my screen shot as the textures available to you depend on the textures you have in your PSP Texture Folder. There are many textures available for download from various web sites on the Internet.
Step 13: Save your image as either JPG or PNG. Just remember shadows are not great saved in GIF format.
