Making Pattern Paper Overlay with PSP

Creating pattern overlays with Paint Shop Pro allow you to design digital scarp book paper with different colours, textures and overlays that result in exciting and interesting scrapbook paper.

Tools Needed:

  • Paint Shop Pro - available here - This tutorial was written for PSPXII, but other versions should work.
  • You will need my pattern supplies to complete this tutorial, click here to download my pattern “SwirlFloral Pattern By MBH“.

Step 1. Open a Pattern image in PSP (Here is the one I used “SwirlFloral Pattern By MBH” for this tutorial)

Make sure your pattern image is no bigger than 300 x 300 on any side. If so resize your pattern Click on Image and Resize.

Step 2. Duplicate Image, click on Windows and select Duplicate. Close the original texture image.

Step 3. If you pattern is not grey or black tones (no colour) then you will need to Convert the image to a grey scaled image, click on Image and select Greyscale.

Minimise this pattern for now.

Step 5. Create a new image 2400 x 2400 300dpi that is transparent.

Step 6. Activate your flood fill tool from the toolsbar.

Step 7. Next set your background colour to your pattern image using the Materials Pallet. You can resize your pattern and angle in the Materials Pattern options if you wish.

Step 8. Fill your new image with the pattern by clicking your flood fill inside your new blank image.

Step 9. Create a new raster layer from the layer menu.

Step 10. Using the materials pallet change your background to colour and select your background colour.

Step 11. Using the flood fill tool from the toolsbar, click the Flood fill inside of your new layer to fill it with your choice of colour

Step 12. Move your Raster 2 layer below raster 1 by clicking on Layers, Arrange and select Send to Bottom.

Step 13. Make Raster 1 (pattern layer) the active layer by clicking on it from the layer pallet.

Step 14. Adjust the Blend Mode to Soft Light or Overlay (depending on the look you desire)

Step 15. Adjust the Opacity between 40 to 80 (depending on the look you desire)

Step 16. Save your paper as a PNG or JPG, File Export JPG with compression of 10
