Making Vintage Pattern Overlay with PSP

Vintage scrap booking is a style fast becoming a favourite of many, today we will show you how you can achieve your own vintage pattern paper overlays with PSP.

Following on from the Pattern Paper Overlay Tutorial, with the addition of a filter you can achieve a vintage look or a grunge vintage style paper.

Here is my tutorial to guide you with marking your own vintage pattern paper overlay using PSP.

Tools Needed:

  • Paint Shop Pro - available here - This tutorial was written for PSPXII, but other versions should work.
  • You will need my pattern supplies to complete this tutorial, click here to download my pattern “SwirlFloral Pattern By MBH” .


Step 1.
Open Pattern image in PSP (Here is the one I used “SwirlFloral Pattern By MBH” for this tutorial - I use free ware ding fonts to create my own patterns)

Make sure your pattern image is no bigger than 300 x 300 on any side. If so resize your pattern Click on Image and Resize.

Step 2. If you pattern is not grey scale or black and white, please convert image to a grey scaled image, click on Image and select Greyscale.

Minimise this pattern for now.

Step 3. Create a new image 2400 x 2400 300dpi that is transparent.

Step 4.. Activate your flood fill tool from the toolbar.

Step 5.. Next set your background colour to your pattern image using the Materials Pallet. You can resize your pattern and angle in the Materials Pattern options if you wish.

Step 6. Fill your new image with the pattern by clicking your flood fill inside your new blank image.

Step 7. Create a new raster layer from the layer menu.

Step 8. Using the materials pallet change your background to colour and set the colour to the background colour you wish to use. ( I used blue)

Step 9. Using the flood fill tool from the toolsbar, click the Flood fill inside of your new layer to fill it with your choice of colour

Step 10. Move your Raster 2 layer below raster 1 by clicking on Layers, Arrange and select Send to Bottom.

Step 11. Make Raster 1 (pattern layer) the active layer by clicking on it from the layer pallet.

Step 12. Adjust the Blend Mode to Soft Light or Overlay (depending on the look you desire)

Step 13. Adjust the Opacity of your layer to between 40 and 80 (depending on the look you desire)

Step 14. Create a New Layer, Layer - New Raster Layer

Step 15. Merge your layers so far so you have only one layer. (Layers, Merge Visible)

Step 16. Activate the Flood Fill tool. Using the materials pallet change your background to colour not pattern and set the colour to black.

Step 17. Using the flood fill tool from the tools bar, click the Flood fill inside of your new layer to fill it with black.

Step 18. Click on Adjust menu, select Add / Remove Noise and select Add Noise with the following settings:

  • Uniform Checked
  • Monochrome Checked
  • Noise set to 25%

Step 19. Apply the MuRa’s Meister Cloud filter, click on Effects, Plugins, MuRa Meister and click on Cloud. Use the following settings:

  • Light: White
  • Foreground: White
  • Background: White
  • Blend Mode
  • Effects: 100
  • Amount: 100
  • Grain: 3
  • All remaining set to 0

Step 20. Adjust the layer Blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light as to your liking as to which one you use.

Step 21. Adjust the Layer Opacity to 65 (or to your own liking)

Step 22. Create a New Layer, Layer - New Raster Layer

Step 23. Activate the Flood Fill tool.

Step 24. Using the materials pallet change your background to colour not pattern and set the colour to black.

Step 25. Using the flood fill tool from the tools bar, click the Flood fill inside of your new layer to fill it with black.

Step 26. Click on Adjust menu, select Add / Remove Noise and select Add Noise with the following settings:

  • Random Checked
  • Monochrome Checked
  • Noise set to 45%

Step 27. Next click on the Effects menu, select Artistic Media Effects, and click on Brush Strokes

  • Softness: 20
  • Brush Bristles: 256
  • Width: 2
  • Opacity: 92
  • Strokes Length: 20
  • Density: 71
  • Lighting Angle: 0
  • Colour: Light grey #F5F5F5

Step 28. By applying a threshold to the layer we can change its effect for the desired look, click on Adjust, select Brightness/contrast and click on Threshold. Set the threshold to 38.

Step 29. Adjust the layer Blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light from the Layer Properties

Step 30. Adjust the Layer Opacity to 20 (adjust to your own liking) using the Layer Properties

Here is a sample of how your layer pallet should appear:

Step 31. You are nearly finished now, next merge the layers visible.

Step 32. Save your paper as a PNG or JPG, File Export JPG with compression of 10
