  • PSP9 available here
  • Fantastic Machines Paint Engine available here
  • Letter Creator available here (optional)

Materials Needed:

  • Tube of choice (no wider than 400 pixels - recommended not mandatory)
  • A mask with a top and bottom edge design.

Before we start:

  • Settings will remain the same unless otherwise indicated.
  • Shortcuts for some tools will be in parentheses.
  • Have your selected tube open in PSP.
  • Have your selected mask open in PSP if not using a mask loaded into your PSP mask folder.
  • Activate your image rules by choosing View-Rulers (Ctrl+Alt+R).
  • Remember to save often.

The Stationery Background Layer

1. Shift+D to duplicate tube.

2. Close original.

3. Shift+D for second duplicate (2 total)

4. Resize one of the images.

Settings:

Pixel Dimensions: 75 Percent

Resample Using: Bicubic

Lock Aspect Ratio: Checked

Resize All Layers: Checked

6. Adjust/Sharpness/Sharpen

Note: Write down the width of the resized tube image.

7. Minimize that image.

8. Working on the second image

Image/Resize

Settings:

Pixel Dimensions (in pixels)

Height: keep the same height

Width: width of resized tube + 150

The number you just wrote down.

Resample using Bicubic

Lock aspect ratio Unchecked

Resize all layers Checked

9. Use the Dropper tool (e) megantopborder003

choose a foreground color (left click) and

choose a background color (right click)

Note: One of these colors will be used as your text background, so choose a text-friendly color. It can be light or dark. Otherwise, color choice is up to you.

10. Materials Palette

Change the background color to gradient

11. Left click material box to open the gradient selection box.

Select Foreground-Background

Settings:

Angle: 45

Repeats: 0

Invert unchecked

Style: Linear

Texture unchecked

12. On the open tube image

Layers/New Raster Layer

Match Mode: None

Blend: Normal

Opacity: 100

Fill the layer with your gradient.

Bias: .00

Effect:

Amount: 1.73

Wrap Edges unchecked

Stroke:

Type: Saturation 2

Input checked

Line unchecked

**Length: 40 (default is 30)

**Radiate: 2.00 (default is 1.00)

Motion Angle: 93

Curl: 10

Operation Angle: 130

Curl: 53

RGB Channel: R selected

Note: You may want to save these settings for later use.

APPLY

17. Effects/Image Effects/Seamless Tiling

Settings: default

Tiling method: Corner

Direction: Bidirectional

H Offset and V Offset: both 0

Transition (%): 50

Corner Style: Linear

OK

18. Materials Palette

Change your gradient back to solid color.

The Mask Layer

Note: The first option is if you have the mask open in PSP. The second option is if you are using a mask in your PSP Mask folder.

19A. Layers/New Mask Layer/From Image

Settings:

Source window - Choose your mask image

Source luminance checked

Invert mask data - depends on the mask

You want most of your image to show.

19B. Layers/Load-SaveMask/Load Mask From Disk

Choose your mask

Fit to canvas checked

Invert transparency - depends on mask

You want most of your image to show.

Direction: Horizontal

Note: Depending on your mask design this may not be necessary. If your mask is not right up against the edge of the image, you may want to skip this step. If it looks like you have a “ghosting” of your mask design after this step, you may want to undo it.

22. Make note where the top solid edge of your mask is and write it down. Subtract this number from the height of your image. Write that down, too.

Note: Use your image rulers to help. They should be on (View/Rulers).

Selection Type: Rectangle

Mode: Replace

Feather: 0

Anti-alias checked

Left: 0

Top: top solid edge of mask

(first number you wrote down) + 50

Right: width of image

Bottom: second number you wrote

minus 50

Note: If your mask/background image is less than 250 high, you may want to reduce your +50 and -50 to +25 and -25.

24. Layers/New Raster Layer

25. Flood fill tool (f) megantopborder004

Settings: same as used before (Step 12)

26. Flood fill layer with one of your

solid colors.

Note: This color will also be used for your text background.

27. Effects/PlugIns/Fantastic Machines/PaintEngine

Settings:

SoftMarble 1 (default - see Step 15)

Change Stroke Length to 30

Change Radiate to 1.00

(if needed)

28. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow

Settings:

Vertical: 2

Horizontal: 2

Opacity: 30

Blur: 10.00

Color: your choice

Shadow on new layer unchecked

OK

29. Repeat drop shadow changing

V & H to -2 (minus)

OK

30. Selections/Select None

31. Effects/Image Effects/Seamless Tiling

Settings:

Tiling Method: Edge

Direction: Horizontal

Width: 50

Transition: 50

OK

32. Image/Canvas Size

Settings: Pixels

Width: width of your image

Height: 1600

Lock aspect ratio unchecked

Background: Null

Placement: Top Center arrow

OK

Note: You may want to hit the + (plus) sign on your number pad to zoom in.

33. Layers/New Raster Layer

Settings: Same as before (Step 12)

35. Flood fill with same solid color used in Step 26.

36. Apply Paint Engine with same settings used in Step 27. They should already be set.

37. Effects/Image Effects/Seamless Tiling

Settings: Default

Hit the megantopborder007 at the top

Note: Some color combinations will not appear seamless even when

using this.

You may have to use another seamless plugin or program on your finished image.

38. Layers/Arrange/Send to Bottom

39. Layer Palette

Click on middle layer (painted mask layer) to make it active.

40. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow

Settings: same as used before (Step 29)

OK

41. Repeat drop shadow changing

V & H to 2

OK

42. Layer Palette

Click on top layer (painted solid strip) to activate it.

43. Maximize duplicate tube image that you resized in Step 4.

44. On duplicate tube image

Edit/Copy

45. Edit/Paste as New Layer onto stationery image

Move the tube between the upper and lower edges of the painted strip.

It is okay if it overlaps.

Note: You may choose to resize and sharpen again.

47. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow

Settings: same as used in Step 41

This should already be set.

OK

Note: You may repeat the drop shadow, reversing your numbers as before if you like.

48. Apply watermark and artist credits.

Note: You may add text and/or embellishments if you like.

49. Layers/Merge/Merge Visible

Note: This needs to be done if you are planning to make a tag.

50. File/Export/JPEG Optimizer

Settings:

Compression: between 20 and 25

Note: Try to get your image size under 125 kbs.

51. Save your JPEG.

The Tag

1. Selection tool (s) megantopborder005

Settings: same as before

2. Drag your cursor to select the area that is the top border of your image.

3. Edit/Copy

4. Edit/Paste as a New Image

5. Add text, frames, or a beveled edge if you like.

6. Resize and sharpen as preferred.

7. Save as a different file name in your preferred format.

Note: Saving in gif format may give you a sharper image than jpeg format.

Letter Creator

1. Body Tab

Image: your saved stationery jpeg

Tile: clicked (your choice)

Note: Tiling leaves your text static. Unclicked will scroll your text.

Text: choose a complimentary font and complimentary text and link colors

Margins:

Top: adjust so text is 10 pixels below lower edge of top border

Left: 10

Right: 10

2. Footer Tab

Add creator information:

Your letter name

Your name and link

Add tutorial information:

3. Finish Tab

Name your letter and choose your collection.

Click Save Project.

Click Add to Incredimail.
