A Faster Paint Shop Pro
- Is Paint Shop Pro Slow to Open
- Do you clean your computer regularly?
I have often found Paint Shop Pro can take several minutes to start, and it seems the more I have used Paint Shop Pro for my digital scrap booking the slower it becomes, taking longer and longer to start.
I thought that many of us in the PSP Scrap booking community would benefit from two tips to keep your Paint Shop Pro starting quicker and your computer running efficiently.
1. Clean and rebuild the Paint Shop Pro Cache often.
2. Clean your computer temporary files daily where possible.
So how do you go about cleaning and rebuilding your PSP Cache, and what are the temporary files on your computer? Let me tell you.
Cleaning and rebuilding your Paint Shop Pro cache
Paint Shop Pro uses what is called cache files to store information about the settings you use within Paint Shop Pro and the location of your files for Paint Shop Pro include your preset shapes, paint shop pro plugins, paint shop pro textures and not forgetting Paint Shop Pro bushes.
From time to time (when you notice that your Paint Shop Pro is slow to start) you should perform a routine clean and recreation of your Paint Shop Pro cache files.
For Paint Shop Pro X version and above
Step 1. Open My Computer
Step 2. Click on your hard drive and navigate to the Corel user application data folder which is like this:
C:\Documents and Settings\<
Step 3. Next you will need to delete a few files from this folder. There is no need to be concerned it is safe to remove these files without any trouble. These files will be recreated when you next open Paint Shop Pro.
Locate the below three files and delete them:
- thumbnails.db
- ImageDB.db
- LastDBFilter.PspCache
Step 4. Before you reopen Paint Shop Pro, you MUST now remove all of the content you have within your “My Pictures” folder by moving them to an alternative folder temporarily.
As the My Pictures folder is the place where you store your photos and because you have removed the ImageDB file in the previous steps above to limit any corrupt or lose of photos it is recommend you remove your pictures from the My Pictures folder.
I would suggest you create a new folder inside “My Documents” called Photo Backup and move your items into this new folder.
Besides this is a good time to back up your photos and scrap JPG pages to a disc for safe keeping right So use your favourite CD burner program and burn a data CD with all the photos that you have in that Photo Backup folder.
Step 5. Finally step is to now open your Paint Shop Pro program. The first time you start Paint Shop Pro after this cleaning you may find it will take a few moments to recreate those files we removed in the previous step. But from this point forward you will find that Paint Shop Pro will start a lot faster that it was before you cleaned up these files.
PS. . I have found that if you have an large number of Paint Shop Pro elements in you’re My PSP folder will affect the speed in which your Paint Shop Pro will start. (this is the folder stored in you’re My Documents by Corel when you installed Paint Shop Pro)
Try to only include in the My PSP folder the items you need for your project. This includes, Preset Shaps, PSP Brushes, PSP Plugins, PSP Textures, PSP Patterns and the like.
Another tip I have for you is to clean your computer, yep you need to clean out certain files from your computer, that if left over time will slow your computer down and use computer resources that you would rather have free for your digital scrap booking.
Let’s now look at cleaning our temporary files from your computer.

From what I’ve read you are telling me to delete all of my pictures - this is a bit drastic as I have over 5000 photos in my pictures.
I think I’ll stick to waiting a few seconds longer for PSP to open and I’d advise anyone else to do the same.

What was explained is that you perform steps to removing the photos from your My Pictures folder and place them to an alternative folder. not removing your photos permanently from your computer unless you so wish to do so by backing them up to a CD for safer keeping.
The removing of your pictures from My Pictures temporarily is required as PSP will rebuild the files you removed in the first steps of this process, noting the Thumbnails.db and ImageDB.db files. It may cause corruption to your photo images if they remain in that folder when you first open PSP and the rebuilding of the files is started.
Relying totally on the store of your hard drive for your precious memories and photos is not recommended, you never know when that hard drive may fail you and worst still be effected with a malicious virus of sorts.
