Tools Needed:

  • PSP9 available here - This tutorial was written for PSP9, but other versions should work.
  • Filters Unlimited 2.0 available here
  • (optional - any PSP texture or textureplug-in is fine)
  • Letter Creator (optional)
  • Tube of choice (not a graphic)
  • The one I used is available here.
  • Trellis tube (or another tube)
  • The one I used is available here.
  • Design element or ding font (optional)
  • I used Oriental View available here.
  • A gradient of choice

Before We Start:

All settings will remain the same unless otherwise noted.

Shortcuts for some tools are in parentheses.

This tutorial has lots of room for individual choice. Please feel free to change colors, fills, textures, bevels, shadows and layer positions as you would like.

The point is to have fun!
If you will be using a ding font, have it open on your desktop.
If you will be using a design element, you will need to open it in PSP.

Set your background colour to your chosen gradient.
Note: There are three colours of trellis in the tube I used. Here is how to get just one.

a) Open the tube.

b) Shift+D to duplicate the tube.

c) Close the original.

d) Use the selection tool TrellisFrame003 to draw around the color you want.

e) Edit/Copy/Paste as New Image

f) Minimize it.

The Background

1. Open your tube and Shift+D to duplicate.

2. Close the original.

3. Use your dropper tool (d) TrellisFrame004 and select a color from your tube (left click to make it the foreground color).

You may minimize your tube image if you wish.

4. Open a new image.

Settings:
Size: 100X100 pixels
Resolution: 72 pixels/inch
Raster layer - 16 million colours
Transparent

5. Flood fill tool (f) TrellisFrame005

Settings:
Match mode: RGB Value
Tolerance: 20
Sample merged unchecked
Blend: Normal
Opacity: 100

Flood fill the image with your color by left clicking.

6. Apply a texture of choice.

Note: I used Filters Unlimited 2.0 Japanese Paper

7. Effects/Image Effects/Seamless Tiling

Settings: Default
Tiling method: Corner
Direction: Bidirectional

Settings:
Horizontal offset: 0
Vertical offset: 0
(Width: 50)
Transition: 50
Corner style: Linear

8. File/Export/JPEG Optimizer

Settings:
Compression = 25
Name it Trellis Background Tile.jpg

DO NOT CLOSE

The Header

1. Materials Pallette Set your foreground color to the pattern created by the open background image.

2. Open new image

Settings:
Change size to 350 W X 300 H all the rest are the same

3. Flood fill tool (f) TrellisFrame005_0000 - fill with background image pattern.

Note: From now on, this will be called your working image.

4. Activate the trellis tube you have chosen.

5. Edit/Copy

6. Edit/Paste as New Layer onto working image.

7. Minimize the trellis tube.

8. Click on the layer containing the trellis image to make it active.

9. Layers/Duplicate

10. Arrange the two trellis pieces where you would like them with the Mover tool TrellisFrame006.

Note: I have put mine as close to centered from top to bottom as I can and about 20 pixels in from the right and left sides, but it is up to you.

11. Click the eye on your background layer to hide it, and then click one of your trellis layers to activate it.

12. Layers/Merge/Merge Visible

13. Click the eye on the background layer again to reveal it.

14. Click on the merged trellis layer -Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow

Settings:
Horizontal: -1
Vertical: -1
Opacity: 85
Blur: 3.00
Color: Black

Note: Next you are going to create a design with your ding font that will be a separate layer underneath the main picture tube.

15. Your background color should be your chosen gradient/color.

Gradient settings:
Angle: 45
Repeats: 0
Style: Linear

6. Text tool TrellisFrame007 (t)

Select the ding font of your choice.

Settings:
Create as vector
Direction: Horizontal and Down
Size: 200 (what I used)
Stroke: 0
Bold
Alignment: Center
Anti-alias: Smooth
Auto Kern: checked
Leading, Kerning and Tracking: all 0

Note: I used the lowercase letter g.

17. Objects/Align/Center on Canvas

18. Convert to raster layer

19. Selections/Select All - Selections/Float

20. Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel

Settings:
Bevel: #2
Width: 5
Smoothness: 19
Depth: 3
Ambience: 0
Shininess: 31
Colour: White
Angle: 49
Intensity: 34
Elevation: 45

OK

Note: You may use a bevel of your choice.

21. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow

Settings:
Change Vertical and Horizontal to 1. The rest are the same.

22. Selections/Select None

23. Maximize your non-trellis tube

24. Image/Resize (if larger than 300 W)

Settings:
Size: your preference
Resample using: Bicubic
Lock aspect ratio checked
Resize all layers checked

25. Adjust/Sharpness/Unsharp Mask

Settings:
Radius: 83.53
Strength: 21
Clipping: 10
Luminance only unchecked

26. Edit/Copy
27. Edit/Paste as New Layer onto your working image.

28. Minimize copy of tube.

29. Move TrellisFrame006_0000 the pasted tube where you would like it.

30. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow

Settings: same as before

Note: This would be a good time to add your watermark.

31. Layers/Merge/Merge All(Flatten)

DO NOT CLOSE

Framing the Header

Continuing with your working image

1. Image/Add Borders

Settings:
Color: one that does not match your background
Size: 5
Symmetrical checked

2. Magic Wand tool TrellisFrame008

Settings:
Mode: Add(Shift)
Match Mode: RGB Value
Tolerance: 0
Sample merged checked
Contiguous checked
Feather: 0
Anti-alias checked
Outside

3. Select the new border

4. Flood fill tool (f) TrellisFrame005 - right click to fill with your gradient.

Settings: same as before

5. Effects/3D Effects/Inner Bevel

6. Selections/Invert

a) Click the Crop tool TrellisFrame009.

b) On the Tool Options palette, all the way to the right there are three icons.

Choose the middle one:
Layer Opaque

c) Double-click inside the box.

53. Effects/3D Effects/Drop Shadow Settings: Change V & H to 1.

54. Layers/Add Raster Layer

55. Flood fill tool (f) TrellisFrame005 -

Settings: Change Match Mode to None.

Fill with background image pattern.

56. Layers/Arrange/Send to Bottom

57. Layers/Merge/Merge Visible

58. Materials Palette Change foreground to the pattern made from the new trellis image.

Settings:
Angle: 0
Scale: 25

59. Activate working copy.

60. Image/Add Borders

Settings: Change size to 10

Note: You may stop here if you are just making a signature tag.

Side Border Icons

1. Selection tool (s) TrellisFrame003

Drag to select from the upper left corner toward the lower right until you are at x55 X y390 (or what looks good to you).

Note: Use the image guidelines in the lower right under the layer palette.

2. Edit/Copy
2b. Edit/Paste as New Image

Minimize the header image.

3. Image/Canvas Size

Settings:
New Dimensions:

Double the width and keep the same height of your newly copied selection image.

Color: Null
Lock Aspect Ratio: unchecked
Placement: Click the left center button.

4. Layers/Duplicate

5. Image/Mirror

Note: You may add your watermark, an accent, or a ding if you like.
6. Layers/Merge/Merge Visible

7. Resize to 70 pixels wide (keep height the same).

8. File/Export/JPEG Optimizer with Compression = 25

Name it Side Border Icon.jpg

Putting It All Together

1. Open Letter Creator

2. In the Body section, open your Background.jpg

3. Tile the image.

4. In the Header section, choose Align Center and insert your Header.jpg image.

5. Return to the Body section and choose a complimentary text color and font.

6. In the Left section, choose Top and Align Left.

7. Insert your Side Border Icon.jpg image.

Note: You may add more than one if you like.

8. In the Right section, choose Top and Align Right.

9. Insert your Side Border Icon.jpg image(s) as you did for the Left side.

10. In the Footer section, add your creator, artist and tutorial information.
