Using a Mask on a Photo for Scrap Booking
Now that I know you have been busy making masks in Paint Shop Pro using different shapes after our last tutorial let me show you how you can use these masks on photos for a awesome affect with your scrap book layouts.
By using different mask styles and shapes on a photo you can achieve fantastic scrap book pages, like this one in the sample shown. In just 6 steps you too can use masks on your photos for a masked photo effect.
If you would like to use the photo image that I used for the tutorial - click here to save the image to your PC.
Step 1. Open Paint Shop Pro and click on File and then open your photo image you wish to use in your layout.
Step 2. Resize your photo by clicking on the Image menu and select Resize.
Adjust your resize options as follows:
- Adjust the Pixel Dimensions to 400 for the highest point either the width or the height. Neither the height or width should exceed 400 and use smart resizing if you use advanced setting options.
Why did you need to resize this photo image? Because the masks you may have created if using the Making Masks tutorial are 400 x 400 in size the mask when applied to any image will only be 400 in size. For best results using this style you need to resize your photo image to 400 on the longest side either height or width. Alternatively if you need your photo image size larger than 400 (especially for larger scrap book layouts) you will need to create your masks with a larger image size EG: 1000 x 1000.
Step 3. Click on Layers, and select Load Save Mask and click on Load Mask from Disk.
A dialogue box will open and you will see the library of masks on your computer. Browse through the masks until you find the mask you wish to use, for this tutorial lets use the mask we create in the previous tutorial “Making Masks in PSP” the circle.msk file we just created and that’s your mask.
Adjust your settings as follows:
- Create Mask From: Source Luminance
- Orientation: Fit to Layer
- Options: Hide all Masks
Click the LOAD Button.
Step 4. You will notice that the Mask layer is the active layer within your Layer pallet, if it is not please select it now to make it active.
Step 5. Click on the Layers menu and select Delete. Click Yes on the pop up box that asks “Would you like this layer merged to the layer below it”
Step 6. Click on the Layers menu and select Merge and click on Merge Group.
Congratulations you have now just created a masked image from your original photo.
To use this photo on a scrap book layout simply copy the image and paste it as a new layer on your scrap book layout page you are working with.
Here is a sample below of how you use this masking image technqiue for scrap book page, click on the image to see the larger preview.
